College Tennis News - Action Continues at ITA Midwest Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Play continued Saturday at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes’ doubles team of Cami Hubbs and Kelsey Haviland advanced to the quarterfinals, while Buckeye seniors Christina Keesey and Kirsten Flower reached the third round of the singles draw. Action continues through Tuesday.

In doubles, the tandem of Hubbs and Haviland advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over fellow No. 5-8 seed Abajian and White of Illinois. They will take on Notre Dame’s Frilling/Krisik (ND), the draw’s No. 1 seed, at 11 a.m. ET Sunday.

In singles, three Buckeyes posted first-round wins and Flower had a bye. Paloma Escobedo downed Maha Guirguis of Toledo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Keesey defeated Northwestern’s Elena Chernyakova, winning both sets in a tiebreaker, 7-6, (5), 7-6 (4). Freshman Gabby Steele posted an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Michigan’s Taylor Fournier.

In the second round Keesey advanced with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over No. 5-8 seed Zara Harutyunyan of Akron and Flower beat Angelina Jogasuria of Akron, 6-3, 6-3. Escobedo lost to top seed Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, 6-2, 6-1 and Steele lost to No. 3 seed Samantha Murray, 6-2, 6-1.

Three Buckeyes were knocked out in the first round of singles play. Cami Hubbs lost Xu Chang of Eastern Michigan, 6-4, 7-6 (9). Fidan Manashirova was defeated by Akron’s Angelina Jogasuria and Kelsey Haviland lost to the Zips’ Angelika Jogasuria, 6-2, 6-2.
