STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State men’s tennis team will take four members of their team to the Birmingham Future’s event, which will be played on clay courts.
MSU’s sophomore Artem Ilyushin, who stands at 83rd-nationally, leads the Bulldogs into the event with a 7-2 singles record, including wins over three-ranked opponents. State’s sophomore Louis Cant has also enjoyed some fall success, tallying a team-high 11 wins this fall.
The Bulldogs’ junior Antonio Lastre will make the trip after putting together a 9-2 record in the fall, and began the fall play with seven-straight wins. Senior Chris Doerr of Mississippi State will round out the Bulldog lineup, taking in five wins into the event.
“It is a great experience for the guys to play the futures tournament,” said head coach Per Nilsson. “They are planning on making a living as professional tennis players after they are done at Mississippi State, so whenever we get the chance to play these tournaments we take advantage of it.”
Action will begin at the Birmingham Futures tournament on Friday, Oct. 30.
