College Tennis News - University of San Francisco defeats WCC Opponent St. Mary's Gaels

(Moraga, Calif.) - Thanks to a win my Mark DeCastro in singles action, the USF men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's Wednesday in Moraga.

With the victory, USF improved to 3-3 on the season, including a 2-0 mark against league opponents.

San Francisco jumped out to an early lead in doubles action, as the Dons swept the three sets. DeCastro and Einar Hart got USF off on the right foot at No. 3, earning an 8-3 victory over Mike Luck and Jerry Ellison. Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen secured the doubles point at No. 1 with an 8-5 win over Lucas Tirelli and Sherif Hamdy, while William Schumacher and Rainer Nauchbauer led the Dons to a sweep with an 8-6 victory over Gavin Leon and Steven Dawson at the No. 3 spot.

In singles action, USF garnered the victory with wins at No. 1, 2, 5 and 6. Saint Mary's took the first singles point, taking a victory at No. 3, before Cohen the Dons back atop with at No. 2 victory - 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 - over Andrea Zannoni. USF stretched their lead with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 victory at the top stop by Thai Tu, before DeCastro was able to secure the win thanks to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5.

USF will return to the courts Saturday at 1 p.m. as they face UC Davis in Davis.
