MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- On Sunday, the Eastern Illinois men’s tennis squad lost at undefeated Marquette, 6-1, and then dropped a tough 5-2 neutral court match to UW-Green Bay. The Panthers fell to 2-7 on the season having now lost six straight.
Versus Marquette, freshman Michael Sperry picked up the lone Eastern win in singles play, as he hit past his opponent in a three-set nailbiter (6-7, 6-3, 1-0 [10-7]) at No. 6 Singles, while senior Jeff Rutherford narrowly lost a three-set match at the top of the line-up his 88th-Ranked opponent.
Eastern also lost the important doubles-point as Marquette won all three duo contests.
Against UWGB, EIU won the crucial doubles-point by taking two of the three matchups by identical 8-4 scores, as Rutherford and freshman Justin Haag teamed to win at the No. 1 spot and Michael Sperry and Jamie Firth combined to win at No. 3 duos.
Unfortunately, Eastern were only able to pick up one singles contest as Haag won at No. 5 Singles in straight sets.
