Laie, HI—The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team faced its toughest test of the season thus far today and came away with a 7-2 win over 11th-ranked Clayton State (GA). The Seasiders won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to improve to 9-0 for the season.
BYU–Hawaii’s Yuan Jia and Elwen Li battled to an 8-5 win at number one doubles while Jenny Chin and Salina Aranda were breezing to an 8-0 win at the third doubles spot. Shawni Porter and Ayako Ikeda lost a tough, 9-8(5) decision at the second doubles spot.
Jia earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at number one singles and Li won 6-1, 6-1 at the second spot. Porter came back to claim a 1-6, 6-2, (10-8) win at number four, Chin powered her way to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the fifth spot, and Aranda won 6-1, 6-3 at number six singles. Ikeda dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision at number three singles.
The Seasiders play again tomorrow against Bloomsburg in Laie at 2:00 pm HST.
