Senior Carmen Pop won her 10th straight match in knocking off a nationally ranked opponent.
Humacao, Puerto Rico (3/9/10) - Senior Carmen Pop continued her stellar play with an upset win over a nationally ranked singles player in the No. 65 William and Mary women’s tennis team’s 5-2 setback to No. 3-ranked Notre Dame at Palmas in Humacao, Puerto Rico on Tuesday. The Irish swept the doubles matches, before taking four of six singles positions to claim the victory. W&M falls to 5-8 on the year, while Notre Dame ups its ledger to 12-1.
Pop extended her singles winning streak to 10 matches with a straight-sets win over a nationally ranked player at the No. 3 singles slot. The Tribe senior disposed of No. 90-ranked Chrissie McGaffigan, 6-2, 6-3, for her second career win over a nationally ranked foe. With the win, Pop improved to 18-7 on the season, including a stellar 12-1 mark in dual-match competition.
Freshman Nina Vulovich claimed the College’s other point with a straight-sets win over Kristen Rafael at the No. 5 singles position. Vulovich tallied her 13th win of the season in downing Rafael, 6-2, 6-4.
The Green and Gold returns to action on Thursday, March 11, when it faces its second top 10 foe of the week in No. 7 Duke on Thursday. The match will also be played at the Villas in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
