College Tennis News - LSU women's tennis team splits doubleheader

BATON ROUGE—After dropping its first match, 7-0, versus No. 22 Ole Miss, the LSU women’s tennis team bounced back to dominate Southern by a 7-0 decision Sunday at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.

“I’m really disappointed with how we played against Ole Miss. Give credit to Ole Miss. They played really well,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “The loss is disappointing because we’ve been playing with a lot more intensity. I was happy with the way we bounced back against Southern, though.”

Ole Miss took an early lead as it captured the doubles point. On court two Keri Frankenberger and Hannah Robinson finished first as they fell short to Connor Vogel and Gabby Rangel 8-0. Lady Tigers Whitney Wolf and Kaitlin Burns dropped their match to 12th-ranked Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen 8-3 as the Rebel pair clinched the doubles point on court one.

On court three, Nicole Kantor and Ebie Wilson gave tremendous effort in their seesaw match against Abby Guthrie and Laura van de Stroet; the Rebels completed the doubles sweep as they took the match on court three 8-7(7).

In singles, Nijssen ousted Burns on court two 6-0, 6-1. On court six, Kylie Adamek finished second as she lost to Rangel 6-4, 6-2.

Ole Miss’s (8-2, 3-1 SEC) Guthrie took down Frankenberger on court four to clinch the overall match 6-1, 7-6(6).

Sophomore Wolf played well on court one but was not able to upend No. 36 Boxx as the Rebel won the match 7-6(6), 6-2. Vogel finished off the shutout as she defeated Kantor 6-3, 6-2 on court three.

LSU started off their match against Southern strong as it picked up the doubles point. On court one, Wolf and Burns notched an 8-1 victory over SU’s Kathryn Curtis and Megan Wiltz. On court two, Kantor and Wilson were down 3-0 but came back to claim an 8-4 win against Jo’Vonna Gaines and Carlista Mohammad.

On court three, Frankenberger and Mathis cruised past Janelle Mosley and Demetria Woods 8-5.

In singles, Wilson finished first on court five as she defeated Woods 6-1, 6-0. On court six, Adamek raced past Gaines by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

LSU’s Wolf clinched the overall match for the Lady Tigers on court one as she knocked off Wiltz 6-2, 6-1. Kantor followed closely behind on court three as she racked up another win over Mohammed by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Frankenberger gave the Lady Tigers their sixth point as she won her match against Curtis 6-0, 6-2.

Finishing last on court two was Burns as she beat Mosley 6-2, 6-1 to give the Lady Tigers their third blanking of the season.

LSU is now 4-9 on the season with a 1-3 SEC record.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Wednesday for another doubleheader as they take on Tulane at 3 p.m. CDT and Grambling at 7 p.m. at Dub Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge.
