GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Due to a lengthy rain delay that pushed the start of the match back, and more rain later in the day, Mississippi State men’s tennis team’s match at No. 7 Florida Sunday was finally cancelled due to rain with no points determined.
After rain for over three hours delayed the beginning of the contest, the match was finally started with singles first in an attempt to render a winner before the rain interfered again. The teams got roughly halfway through singles action before more rains hit the Gainesville area and the match was ultimately cancelled.
MSU senior Chris Doerr had a one-set lead over Gator Nassim Slilam at the No. 6 position and trailed in the second set when play was suspended, 6-2, 1-5. Bulldog sophomore Artem Ilyushin trailed 3-1 in a first-set tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot to UF’s Antoine Benneteau.
At the No. 4 slot, State’s junior Antonio Lastre dropped the first set and was tied at two-all in the second set when play was halted against Bob Van Overbeek of Florida, 6-3, 2-2. Sophomore Daniel Sanchez of MSU dropped a first-set tie breaker, 7-6(5), at the No. 5 position to Florida’s Sekou Bangoura Jr.
MState’s 54th-ranked sophomore Louis Cant trailed No. 6 nationally ranked Alex Lacroix at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 3-0 when play ended and 101st-ranked Bulldog George Coupland was down 6-3, 4-2, at the No. 2 position to Gator Joey Burkhardt at the time of suspension.
The Bulldogs who are 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, will return to the courts next Sunday at home against the 64th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, for a 1 p.m. match.
