CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Eastern Illinois women’s tennis squad lost a tough 4-3 Ohio Valley Conference home match to visiting UTM Martin on Wednesday, as the Skyhawks swept the Panthers in doubles play to secure the victory.
With the loss, Eastern fell to 4-7 overall and an even 1-1 in league action. UTM improved to 5-3 and 2-0.
The match-opening doubles play would ultimately decide the match as UTM hit past Eastern to win 8-4, 8-4, and 8-0 at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 duos, respectively. Yet both squads won three singles matches.
EIU winners included freshman Merritt Whitley at No. 4, who enjoyed a straight set win (6-2, 6-3). Also victorious in consecutive sets was sophomore Juliana Frey at No. 5 (6-2, 6-4). Sophomore Annie Egan would gut out a tough three-set affair (1-6, 7-6, 7-6) in her No. 6 singles spot.
EIU's Shannon Brooks narrowly lost her No. 3 matchup, as she pushed her Skyhawk opponent to the edge but fell short in the 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 loss.
The Panthers return to the court this coming weekend, as both the men and women squads are set to play in consecutive matches at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
