DANVILLE, Ill. -- The Eastern Illinois women’s tennis squads opened up Ohio Valley Conference action versus Tennessee Tech on Sunday, as the women scratched past the Golden Eagles, 4-3.
Due to predicted inclement weather in the area, the match was moved to the Indoor Tennis Club in nearby Danville.
The Panther women improved to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in league action as the squad split with Tech in singles action as junior Cara Huck, sophomore Annie Egan and newcomer Merritt Whitley each downed their respective TTU opponent, with Huck and Egan winning in straight sets and Whitley capturing a tough three-set win.
The match was ultimately won in doubles, as the teams of Huck/Egan and Shannon Brooks/Kristen Laird were victorious at No. 2 and No. 3 duos, by respective scores of 8-5 and 8-3. The loss dropped the ladies from Tech to a winless 0-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
