LEXINGTON, S.C. – Marija Dzakovic won the lone match of the day as the No. 58-ranked Charleston Southern women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 1-ranked Auburn University Montgomery Thursday afternoon at Lexington Tennis Club.
The Bucs entered the match 11-0 and 4-0 in the Big South Conference, but the six-time defending NAIA national champion Lady Senators (9-2, 2-0 Southern States Athletic Conference) were too much for CSU.
Charleston Southern lost all three doubles matches to fall behind 1-0 early. Olga Makhova and Dzakovic lost 8-7 (8-6) to Ana Veselinovic and Whitney Byrd, and Angie Torres and Andrea Gonzalez fell 8-2 to Nathalie Sienkob and Morgane Zowczak. Brooke Pletcher and Susita Das didn’t fare much better, as they lost 8-4 to Parija Maloo and Alina Tseplukhjova.
Dzakovic won the lone point for CSU as she took down Maloo 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) from the second singles position.
Makhova had her 11-0 streak in singles action snapped as she lost 6-4, 6-4 to Veselinovic at No. 1 singles.
Byrd defeated Pletcher 6-1, 7-6 from third singles, and Zowczak took down Gonzalez 6-2, 6-0 from No. 4 singles. Sienkob battled to a 7-6, 6-3 win over Torres at No. 5 and Tseplukhjova won in straight sets over Das 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6 slot.
