MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Olga Makhova had a dominating performance in her singles match, but the ball didn’t bounce in favor of the other members of the Charleston Southern women’s tennis team as the Buccaneers were unable to nip College of Charleston in a 6-1 loss Monday afternoon at Patriots Point Tennis Center.

The loss is just the second of the 2010 campaign for No. 67 CSU (16-2, 7-0 Big South Conference), and the win pushed No. 68 CofC to 17-9 (9-0 Southern Conference).

The Cougars captured the doubles point despite being pushed to the brink by the traveling Bucs. Susita Das and Brooke Pletcher battled to an 8-7 (9-7) victory over Laura Borza and Anna Lee Evans at No. 3 doubles, but the other two duos were not so fortunate.

Andrea Schutte and Angie Torres fell to the No. 31-ranked tandem of Holly Dowse and Emma Hayman 8-5, and Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic lost 8-4 to Kinsey Casey and Irene Viana.

Pletcher and Das were eliminated quickly in singles action by Caroline Newman and Borza, respectively. They each lost by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores at No. 3 and No. 5.

Despite falling behind 3-0, CSU still had a chance to rally as they did when put in this same situation against Winthrop University.

As each match neared the end and momentum began to swing in favor of the Buccaneers, the balls started to fall in for the home team and they took three of the last four matches to squeak past Charleston Southern.

Makhova was the lone Buc to secure a win, as she defeated Dowse 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 1 singles. Schutte fell to Hayman at the second position 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, Dzakovic lost to Casey 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 4, and Torres couldn’t fight her way back against despite numerous unforced errors from Keely Mulligan in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 loss at the sixth position.
