CHARLESTON, S.C. – Olga Makhova and Angie Torres each won their respective singles matches, but that plus the doubles point wasn’t enough for the Charleston Southern women’s tennis team as East Carolina University came back to defeat the Buccaneers 4-3 Thursday morning at CSU Tennis Complex.

CSU (16-3, 7-0 Big South Conference) will now enter the postseason conference tournament on a two-match losing streak as the road Pirates (17-8, 0-0 Conference USA) handed the Bucs their first home loss of the season.

Charleston Southern easily secured the doubles point as the first and third doubles pairs both won 8-4. Angie Torres and Andrea Schutte dropped Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier, and Susita Das and Brooke Pletcher easily disposed of Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs.

Marija Dzakovic and Olga Makhova had a bit tougher match, but the duo was able to take care of Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang 8-7 (10-8).

Makhova had to work hard to move to 18-1 in singles action, but she got the job done from the first position as she defeated Cook 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Torres defeated Abby Richmond 6-3, 6-0 from the sixth position, but it was two through five where CSU stumbled.

Schutte and Dzakovic were both narrowly defeated in three sets, while Pletcher and Andrea Gonzalez were taken down in straights.

Schutte lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Vogel and Dzakovic fell to Collins 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. LePottier defeated Pletcher 6-3, 6-3, and Zhang handled Gonzalez 6-3, 6-0.
