The St. Cloud State University women's tennis team earned ts first ticket to the NCAA Division II final round with a big 5-0 victory over Mesa State on May 7, in the second round of the NCAA Division II women' tennis championships in Sartell, Minn.
SCSU (24-6) will now advance to the 2010 NCAA Division II final round of 16 teams that will be played at the Sanlando Tennis Center in Altamonte Springs on May 12-15.
The match on May 7 was played indoors at the Gold's Gym Tennis Center in nearby Sartell due to rain in the St. Cloud area.
In the match, the Huskies charged to a 3-0 lead in doubles competition. At first doubles, Kelly Freese and Jacque Doll rolled to an 8-4 win over Mesa's Kate Lowder and Victoria Sargent. At third doubles, Samantha Boushek and Tanya Halloran added an 8-6 win, before the doubles sweep was completed with an 8-6 win by Catarina Franca and Tanya Lenz at second doubles for the Huskies.
In singles play, the Huskies only need two wins to ice the victory. The first victory was served up by Freese with a quick 6-0, 6-3 victory over Lowder at second singles. To end the match, Boushek posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Amber Armendarez at fifth singles. In NCAA competition, the match is halted once one team reaches five points in the team score.
SCSU is slated to open tournament play on May 12 with a match against the winner of the Atlantic 2 Regional tournament that will be decided this weekend. Listed below are the complete results of the match vs. Mesa State:
