The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will host a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Regional Tournament May 14-16 on the Wangerin Courts on campus. UW-Whitewater, 21-9, will open play at 1:00 Friday against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 24-6.
The regional will begin at 9:00 Friday with the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 10-5, facing Carleton College, 19-3. Kenyon College (OH), 19-6, and Trinity University (TX) are the number one and two seeds in the regional, thus earning a bye in the first round. Trinity will play the Carleton/MSOE winner at 9:00 Saturday, and Kenyon will play the Whitewater/Eau Claire winner at 2:00 Saturday. The regional final is set for 12:00 Sunday.
The winner of the Whitewater regional will join seven other regional winners at the final championship series May 25-27 in Oberlin, Ohio.
Kenyon, the North Coast Athletic Conference champion, is ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III national poll. Kenyon's Michael Greenberg (21-7), Tomas Piskacek (16-8), and Jeremy Polster (22-6) are ranked second, seventh and nineteenth respectively in the Central Region of the ITA. Greenberg and partner Charles Brody are the number two doubles team in the region, and Piskacek and Polster are the fifteenth ranked.
Trinity, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titlest, is number thirteen nationally. Like Kenyon, Trinity has several flights that are regionally ranked, in this case the West Region. Max Frey (14-8) is number four in singles, Bobby Cocanougher (13-11) is seventeenth, Erick Delafuente (14-9) is twenty-first, and Corey Kowal (14-8) is twenty-ninth. Cocanougher and Kowal (19-6) are the number three doubles team in the South Region, and Frey/Delafuente (21-4) are one step up in second.
Three other regional participants are ranked in the ITA's Central Region poll. Carleton is seventh, Eau Claire tenth, and Whitewater eleventh. Whitewater's Danny Glinert (21-10) is ranked twenty-fifth in the Central Region, and Glinert and partner Kelvin Caiati (26-7) are number ten in the regional doubles ranking. Peter Dunn (16-8) is ranked twenty-second in the Central Region, and UW-Eau Claire's duo of Phil Loprizi and Chris Kuna, 25-6, are ranked ninth, one notch ahead of Caiati and Glinert.
UW-Whitewater will be making its third consecutive NCAA III tournament appearance. UW-W has fallen in the second round the last two years, losing 5-1 to Texas-Tyler in 2008 and 5-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College last year. Whitewater has faced just one of the 2010 regional teams this year, losing to UW-Eau Claire 7-2 April 17 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The Warhawks earned an at-large berth in the NCAA tourney. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference does not sponsor men's tennis, so UW-W was considered with other independent and non-affiliated teams in filling out the field.
There is no spectator charge for the tournament. Fans are advised that Saturday is UW-W's graduation day and parking near the courts will be limited.
UW-W will use theFour Lakes Athletic Club in Elkhorn, Wisconsin as a backup, in the event of inclement weather.
