ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 34-ranked Slippery Rock women's tennis team defeated No. 50 St. Cloud State 5-3, Wednesday afternoon in the Round of 16 at the Women's Tennis 2010 National Championships from the Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Slippery Rock preserved a 2-1 doubles lead, stifling a St. Cloud State singles comeback, punching a spot into tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Slippery Rock took to an early doubles lead, as the No. 1 team of Laura Hamdy and Dunja Drmac upended Jacquelyn Doll and Kelly Freese in a hard-fought contest by the score of 8-5. St. Cloud State responded with a victory of their own at the No. 2 spot when Catarina France and Kayla Lenz edged the Rock duo of Gibson and Hilborn, 8-6. However, it was Slippery Rock who had final say as Sarah Lynch and Janelle Krantz posted an 8-3 win in the No. 3 slot.

In hotly contested singles play, the Rock and Huskies exchanged wins. Slippery Rock started singles action with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Doll. St. Cloud State got back into the contest with a pair of wins at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Samantha Boushek was a 6-2, 6-1 winner, while Tanya Halloran outlasted a resilient Runyan by the scores of 7-5, 6-4. Still, Slippery Rock proved to be too much as a pair of three-set thrillers tilted on the side of the Rock. Drmac came back from a one-set deficit to win her match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Meanwhile, Gibson defeated Lenz in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to solidify the win.

With the match secured, the remaining match went unfinished.

Slippery Rock advances to the Quarterfinals on Thursday, May 13 to take on Lynn. The match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
