Chicago, IL - Shaking off a bit of rust after a couple of days off, the Robert Morris Women's Tennis team added two more scalps to their belt, sweeping a home tri-meet with decisive wins over the Queen Bees of St. Ambrose University (IA) and the Crimson Wave of the Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the Millennium Courts at Daly Bicentennial Park on Chicago's lake front.
Against the Queen Bees--a team that RMU had never bested on the courts--the Lady Eagles got off to slow start as SAU won both the opening doubles matches, before Karyn Emeralda (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Ana Kostic (Herceg-Novi, Montenegro, pictured above at right) came back to take their match 8-1.
From there the broom came out as the Eagles swept all singles matches, convincingly thrashing SAU by a final of 7-2. Alejandra Gamboa (Cochabamba, Bolivia) beat Chelsea Allbaugh in workmanlike-fashion 6-4, 6-4. Ana Kostic ran her opponent 6-1, 6-1, before Stephanie Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) whipped her foe 6-2, 6-2.  Sami McQueen (Avon, IN) found her form in a convincing 6-3, 6-1, win, and Amy Gil (Hometown, IL) took care of business against SAU's Maurita Flo 6-0, 6-3.
In the final singles contest Karyn Emeralda and SAU's Amanda Gomez played an epic match that had the crowd on their feet.  Emeralda won the first set 6-4, but Gomez regrouped to take the second set 6-3.  The match was decided by a third and final set super-tie-breaker. Emeralda faced five straight match points trailing 9-4 but she refused to go down and in the end stunned her opponent 12-10.
In the day's second match, the Lady Eagles took on Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival, Calumet College of St. Joseph.  The Crimson Wave were simply no match for RMU as they were swept away 9-0.
The pair of wins ran the Lady Eagles' winning streak to eight straight, as they improved to 8-1 on the season.  RMU will wrap up the fall portion of the 2010-2011 schedule this Saturday, October 16, 2010, with a match at home against the NCAA Division I Crusaders of Valparaiso University (IN). The first serve is set for 10:00 AM CDT.
