Manhattan, Kan.--The Nebraska women’s tennis team swept through doubles play and used a key victory at the No. 1 singles position to clinch a 4-3 decision over Kansas State on Friday. No. 41 Nebraska (15-3, 3-1 Big 12) notched its first upset victory of the season in the win against No. 31 Kansas State (11-4, 2-3 Big 12).

Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) posted the first win of the day for NU in doubles action, cruising past Petra Niedermayerova and Nina Sertic (KSU) by a score of 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. The win improves Geibert and Weinstein to 13-3 as a duo for the Big Red this season at the No. 1 position.

The Huskers clinched the doubles point and took an early 1-0 lead after Patricia Veresova and Janine Weinreich (NU) teamed up to down Antea Huljev and Karla Bonacic (KSU) in No. 2 doubles, 8-3. NU completed their sweep when Maike Zeppernick and Chelsea Finnegan (NU) topped Ana Comez Aleman and Petra Chuda (KSU) at the No. 3 position, 8-5.

Kansas State tied things up early on in singles, with Bonacic defeating Weinstein in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The loss is only Weinstein’s fifth of the season and her fourth at the No. 3 position.

Veresova put NU back out in front, 2-1 with her victory in No. 2 singles over Huljev, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The victory elevates Veresova’s record at the No. 2 position to a perfect 12-0. Veresova is 15-3 overall and holds the strongest singles record on the Nebraska roster.

NU tacked on another as Zeppernick put away Carmen Borau Ramos (KSU), 6-3, 6-4. The win put the match at 3-1, with NU only needing one more victory to clinch the win. Kansas State did not give in easily, snagging a win at the No. 5 position to tighten things up.

It would be Geibert who would wrap up the victory for the Big Red in No. 1 singles. After being swept in the first set by No. 43 Niedermayerova, Geibert battled back to capture the next two sets by scores of 7-5 and 6-4. This was Geibert’s first win this season over a nationally ranked opponent in singles. Geibert handed Niedermayerova her first loss since March 20 and only her third loss this spring.

Kansas State would tack on one more win at the No. 4 singles position, but the Huskers had already clinched the upset victory and improved their mark this season against ranked teams to 8-3.

Nebraska will take their momentum into a matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday at noon. The Huskers and the Jayhawks will face off at the 17thand Vine Street Courts in Lincoln. Live stats will be available at Huskers.com.
