LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine was competitive, but could not get by the No. 16 Women of Troy at Marks Stadium on the campus of USC.

The doubles pairs played tough, especially Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) and Hannah Holladay (La Jolla / La Jolla HS). They strung the No. 3 doubles pair of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria out falling 8-5, however, the duo trailed just 6-5 late in the match. Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) also stuck out a tough draw falling 8-3 to Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos. Hammel/Smith trailed 5-3 at one time before Lao/Ramos pulled away.

Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) and Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) each got their first doubles action of the season losing 8-2 to Zoe Scandalis and Valeria Pulido.

Each would represent in singles action as well. Facey made a late surge, but ultimately was downed, 6-0,6-3, to Christian. Goettsching followed suit, 6-0,6-3, to Santamaria, the 18th-ranked singles player in the nation. Courtney Byron struggled to win a set to No. 19 Zoe Scandalis, 6-0,6-0, after a valiant effort in doubles. Kristina Smith tested No. 42 Danielle Lao, 6-1,6-3, in her singles match.

The newbies to the singles lineup were Brooke Schweyer (Palos Verdes Estates/ Palos Verdes HS) and Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary). Schweyer took part in doubles on Wendesday, but against USC she was strictly singles in the No. 6 slot. She was the final ‘Eater to finish up, but came up short to Alison Ramos, 6-2,6-4. Mamiit was making her Anteater debut in the No.5 slot for UCI. The sophomore finished 6-1,6-1 to talented freshman Gabriella DeSimone.

No. 57 UC Irvine’s road continues to get tougher next week as they take on the other school in Los Angeles in the UCLA Bruins who are ranked No. 5 in the country. The match will take place on the campus of UCLA, Wed. Jan. 25th at 1:30 p.m.
