College Tennis News - GW Women's Tennis Earns A-10 Victory Over Duquesne, 4-3

HARMAR, Pa. – The George Washington women’s tennis team won three-of-six singles matches and two-of-three doubles matches to defeat Atlantic 10 opponent Duquesne, 4-3, on Sunday morning at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.

The win marks the first conference victory of the 2012 season for the Colonials (3-3, 1-1 A-10) while the Dukes (3-6, 1-4 A-10) suffer their fourth straight league loss.

Junior Mimi Hamling earned a No. 3 singles victory in convincing fashion, defeating Judy Li, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Meg Tyner remains undefeated in singles play on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chandler Consonery in the fifth flight, and senior Zoe Krohn earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Alrissa Tober at the No. 6 spot.

Senior Jacqueline Corba fell to Vanessa Steiner, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 1 singles match, and sophomore Leah Pascarella fell to Megan O’Sullivan in the second flight in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Sophomore Isabella Escobar dropped a three-set match to Paula Gruber in the No. 4 spot, falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

In doubles play, Escobar and Pascarella teamed up for a No. 2 tiebreaker victory over Steiner and Consonery by a 9-8 (4) score. Corba and Valente defeated Gruber Tara Majdalani, 8-3, in the No. 3 match. Hamling and Krohn dropped their No. 1 match, 8-6, to Li and O’Sullivan.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26 with back-to-back matches at James Madison and conference foe Temple. Saturday’s match is set for 2 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. match on Sunday.
