MONTOGMERY—Alabama State University's (0-10) Lady Hornets tennis team fell the University of South Alabama (8-4) 7-0 in the final home match of the season.
ASU went into the match down a player so they had to battle uphill the entire match and the hot Lady Jags did not make it easy for the Lady Hornets. USA entered the match on a three-match winning streak and undefeated in the month of March and rode that momentum to the shutout victory.
USA only had to win one match in doubles to win the doubles point since the Lady Hornets only played with two doubles teams. Emily Newton and Chane Hines (USA) defeated Natalie Lorenzo and Michelle Barton at one doubles 8-1 to officially gain the doubles point.
USA made it a clean sweep at two doubles as Veronika Kalugina and Mariya Krachok defeated Renita Rhone and Shemka Williams 8-0.
In singles play, USA made it a clean sweep winning all five of the singles matches in straight sets to win their fourth consecutive match and eighth overall.
“Considering we are short-handed and with our lack of depth we are very lop sided in our lineup,” head coach Anuk Christiansz said. “The girls were competing today and have been practicing hard and are giving it their best and that is all coach Seman (Richard) and I can expect out of them is hard work and putting out their best effort and representing ASU.”
“It is a process and we want to take it to another level next year. We have to build and build and make it a better program and it will not be easy, but we will get there.”
The Lady Hornets will finish their season on the road beginning with the SWAC Roundup March 30-April 1 in Baton Rouge, La.
