IRVING, Texas – Samantha Adams (So., New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) has earned the initial Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honor of the 2012 season for matches of March 6-12. This is the first career honor for Adams, which gives the Lady Raiders a Player of the Week honoree in back-to-back years. The program had not received the distinction the previous six seasons.

Adams joins Kendall Brooks (2002), Katja Kovacic (2004) and Elizabeth Ullathorne (2011) as the only Lady Raiders to ever win Big 12 Player of the Week.

Adams has led Texas Tech to its best start in school history with an 11-3 record (8-3 against ranked opponents) and a No. 20 national ranking. Last week, she won all three of her singles and doubles matches to help the Lady Raiders to a 2-1 record.

Her most impressive showing came in Tech’s lone loss when the sophomore beat No. 73 Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3,  and then partnered with Kenna Kilgo to take down the No. 2 doubles team in the country of Frilling and Shannon Mathews, 9-7.

Adams also got singles and doubles wins against Cal Poly and No. 52 Hawai’i.

She is currently 15-9 in singles and 16-6 in doubles this season. Teamed with Kenna Kilgo, Adams has gone 9-4 in dual matches. The duo is 5-3 against ranked opponents this season.
