The University of Florida women’s tennis claimed its second consecutive national title and the program’s sixth overall, defeating UCLA 4-0 in the championship match. After taking the doubles point and getting quick singles wins from Alexandra Cercone and Sofie Oyen, for the second consecutive year Lauren Embree clinched the national title by winning her match.
It marked the first time in the program’s history they claimed back-to-back national titles.
Allie Will and Oyen took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-2, while Cercone and Caroline Hitimana took an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point and give the Gators an early lead.
Cercone then took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chanelle Van Nguyen while Oyen took a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Skylar Morton.
Needing far less drama then a year ago when she took a third set tiebreaker in the Gators’ win over Stanford, Embree sealed the title with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over McCall Jones.
The second-seeded Gators finished the year with a 27-1 record and winners of 22 straight matches. UCLA entered as the No. 1 overall seed and finished the year with a 26-3 record on the year.
For Gators’ head coach Roland Thornqvist it was his third national crown (2003, 2011, 2012).
The national title was the University of Florida’s 28th overall and second this year (men’s indoor track and field). It was the 19th national title under the direction of athletics director Jeremy Foley.
