WASHINGTON - Virginia tennis alumni Treat Huey (Class of 2008) and Dom Inglot (Class of 2009) won their first career ATP World Tour doubles title on Sunday, downing Sam Querrey and Kevin Anderson 7-6(7), 6-7(9), 10-5 in the final of the Citi Open at the FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park. By winning the ATP 500-level event, they become the first Cavaliers to win a championship on the ATP World Tour.

 

Huey and Inglot, currently ranked No. 32 in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings, took an early lead in the match by breaking Querrey's serve in the third game for a 2-1 advantage. They held that advantage until Inglot served for the opening set at 5-4. He fell behind 0-40 but rallied to save the first three break points. However Querrey and Anderson took advantage of the fourth break point in the game to draw even at 5-5. The set went to a tiebreaker and Inglot and Huey built a 5-2 lead. After Querrey and Anderson tied it at 5-5, an Inglot service winner gave them a set point at 6-5. Querrey answered by winning both points on his serve to give his side a set point at 7-6. Huey held serve on his two points for an 8-7 lead and Anderson's double fault on the ensuing point gave the first set to the Virginia alumni.

 

The second set remained on serve the entire way. Huey and Inglot never faced a break point against their serve in the set, but couldn't take advantage of two they had on Anderson's serve in the sixth game of the set. In the breaker, Huey and Inglot had three match points (at 6-5, 7-6 and 9-8), but Querrey and Anderson saved them all and took the breaker 11-9 to force a decisive match tiebreaker.

 

In the match tiebreaker, the teams were tied 3-3 through six points before Huey and Inglot won five of the next six points to take an 8-4 lead. Leading 9-5, they took advantage of their fourth match point as a Huey serve handcuffed Querrey for a service winner.

 

It was Huey's fourth career ATP Tour final and Inglot's second. In April they teamed to reach the final at the US Clay Court Championships in Houston. 

 

 

 

 

Huey and Inglot become the fifth set of collegiate teammates to go on and win an ATP Tour doubles title since 2000. They join three sets of Stanford teammates (Bob and Mike Bryan; Scott Lipsky and David Martin; Jared Palmer and Alex O'Brien) and Brown alumni Adil Shamasdin and James Cerratani in accomplishing the feat.
