TULSA, Okla. - The Drake men's tennis team garnered a trio of singles wins in the qualifying draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships on Monday (Oct. 1) to survive and advance.
Junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) opened competition for the Bulldogs handing 51st-rated Alex Petrone of Michigan a 6-2, 6-2 setback. Goodman moves on to challenge John Warden of Oklahoma on Tuesday (Oct. 2) at 9:00 a.m.
Sophomore Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina), who earned entry into the qualifying round as a lucky loser selection, came up short in a 7-5, 6-4 decision versus 94th-ranked Daniel Kreyman of Wake Forest.
Senior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland) won his fourth-consecutive match at the championship bettering No. 91 Thibaut Visy of San Diego, 6-2, 6-4. McKie advances to face Jason Tahir of Duke in a 9:00 a.m. tilt on Tuesday.
Senior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) capped the Bulldogs' efforts on the day pulling out a 7-6 (7), 1-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Ryan Shane of Virginia in a match that ended just before 9:00 p.m. Ghorbel takes on Chris Diaz of Ohio State in an 11:30 a.m. showdown on Tuesday.
Doubles play swings into action on Tuesday for Drake with a pair of teams competing after Goodman and Salibasic were awarded a berth into the championship on Monday (Oct. 1). The duo will join Ghorbel and McKie, who were previously selected to compete.
Action at the ITA All-American Championships resumes on Tuesday (Oct. 2).
