Tere-Apisah Falls, Begins Consolation Play at All-Americans

Pacific Palisades, Calif.—Georgia State junior Abigail Tere-Apisah fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to begin the 2012 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship on Thursday. She moves on to compete in the main draw singles consolation bracket which begins play on Friday.

The junior’s matchup will be determined by the rest of Thursday’s results at the Riviera Tennis Center in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Tere-Apisah’s opponent, North Carolina sophomore Caroline Price, advances to face Stanford’s Krista Hardebeck after she upset Alabama’s Mary Anne Macfarlane 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday.

Tere-Apisah, the No. 23-ranked player in the ITA Women’s Preseason Singles rankings, was one of four main draw invitees to fall to qualifiers in the early singles session on Thursday. The list included the No. 1-seeded Cristina Sanchez Quintanar of Texas A&M falling in straight sets to Julia Elbaba of Virginia.

The winner of the tournament receives automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., from Nov. 8-11. Singles semifinalists and consolation champions also receive automatic entry into the prestigious tournament, which is the only ITA tournament to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis.
