CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team returns to action at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship, Oct. 19-22. The Green and Gold will have six players competing in the main singles draw, while a trio of W&M teams will take part in the main doubles draw. Senior Jamie Whiteford is the reigning Atlantic Region Singles Champion and enters the event as the No. 2 seed. The University of Virginia will host the regional championships at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.

The top 32 seeds in the 96-player singles draw receive a first-round bye. Whiteford, who is ranked No. 43 nationally, is one of two Tribe seeded players along with junior Ben Guthrie, who is a No. 17-32 seed at the regional championship. Whiteford will face the winner of Villanova's Chris Sietz and Richmond's Sebastien Fauchet in the second round on Saturday. Guthrie meets the victor between Virginia Tech's Aaron Gomez and Richmond's Paul Nahon.

Juniors John Banks and Ben Hoogland as well as sophomore Aaron Chaffee and freshman Scott Huang will all compete in the first round of the singles main draw on Friday. Huang's opening match is slated for 10 a.m. on Friday, and he will meet one of eight qualifiers. Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez-Villa, who is the No. 13 seed, awaits the winner in the second round.

Chaffee will face Bucknell's Kelly Morque at 10 a.m. on Friday with the winner advancing to face No. 9-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech in the second round. Banks meets George Washington's Leo Lapentti at 10 a.m. in the opening round. No. 17-32 seed Claes Goransson of VCU will face the victor in the second round on Saturday. Hoogland drew Penn State's C.J. Griffin in the opening round at 11:30 a.m. with the winner moving on to meet George Washington's Nikita Fomin, who is the No. 10 seed.

The Tribe has a trio of teams in the main doubles draw, beginning on Friday. Guthrie and Whiteford combine to comprise one of the 16 seeded teams in the draw. As a 9-16 seed, the Green and Gold tandem will face the St. Joseph's team of Alex Veronis and Jose Sierra at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center. Hoogland and Huang will face the Morgan State team of Eric and Evan Ward in the opening around at 3 p.m. on Friday, while Banks and Chaffee drew the Richmond pair of Sebastien Fachet and Ethan Dunbar in the first round at 3 p.m.

The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 8-11. The National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the second fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
