COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peter Kobelt, a redshirt junior on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, remained in contention at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships after beating Stephen Ho of Illinois in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. Kobelt, the No. 2 seed from New Albany, Ohio, will face No. 13 Jared Hiltzik (Illinois) in the semifinals Monday.
A winner of three consecutive matches, freshman and 15th seed Constantin Christ (Eppstein, Germany) dropped his quarterfinals match to Hiltzik, 6-4, 6-4, to bow out of competition.
In doubles action, Kobelt and redshirt sophomore Kevin Metka paired up to form the No. 2 tandem in the event. The Buckeye duo faced No. 8 Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski of Illinois in the quarterfinals and dropped a 9-7 decision. On the other side of the doubles bracket, Connor Smith (Senior, Tampa, Fla.) and Hunter Callahan (Redshirt sophomore, Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), the No. 7 seed, suffered the same fate in the final eight as the duo lost, 8-5, to Michigan’s Barrett Franks and Vlad Stefan.
