FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Virginia senior Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) won his first career major collegiate singles title on Sunday by capturing the ITA Indoor ntercollegiate Championship at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. He becomes the third Cavalier to win the prestigious event, joining Somdev Devvarman (2007) and Mitchell Frank (2011).
Jenkins, the No. 6 seed, downed Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine 6-2, 6-1, in the championship match.
With the victory, the Cavaliers swept the two major ITA singles championships this year, as junior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won the ITA All-American Championship last month. Virginia becomes the second school in history to win both titles in the same year with different players, joining Stanford who had Ryan Wolters win the All-American and Jeff Salzenstein win the Indoor Intercollegiate during the 1995-96 season.
Jenkins becomes the fourth Cavalier to win a major collegiate singles title, joining Devvarman (2007 NCAA, 2007 Indoor, 2008 NCAA), Domijan (2010 All-American, 2012 All-American) and Frank (2011 All-American, 2011 Indoor). Virginia's eight major singles titles since 2006-07 are the most of any school, as only USC (three) and Tennessee (two) have won more than one title during that span.
