College Tennis News - Nevolo Falls in Singles at JSM Challenger

URBANA, Ill. - Former Illini Dennis Nevolo fell in round two of singles play in the JSM Challenger Wednesday night at Atkins Tennis Center, while two current Orange and Blue tandems fell in doubles action.

Nevolo, a two-time NCAA All-American, suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss to fourth-seeded Ryan Sweeting, who checks in at No. 147 in the ATP rankings. With the loss, Nevolo exited the singles competition but will be back in action alongside fellow former Illini standout Ruben Gonzales in doubles play.

Meanwhile, current Illinois senior Stephen Hoh paired up with freshman Brian Page in doubles to take on top-seeded John Peers and John-Patrick Smith. The Illini duo managed to force a super tiebreaker but came up short in a 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 decision. Newcomers Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse dropped their doubles match as well, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Michael Russell, the No. 1 seed in singles, advanced with a quick 6-4, 6-4 win over Devin Britton. Third-seeded Denis Kudla dropped his second-round match in a 6-3, 6-2 upset at the hands of Alex Bogdanovic. Seventh-seeded Jack Sock, who played his way to the third round of the U.S. Open earlier this year, cruised to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Bradley Klahn. His win sets up a Sock-Russell matchup tomorrow afternoon.

Play resumes tomorrow at Noon CT. Nevolo and Gonzales will take the court at approximately 5:30 p.m., following a late afternoon match between Russell and Sock.

The JSM Challenger marks the final event of the USTA Pro Circuit season. Action will be streamed live at procircuit.usta.com.
