BERKELEY - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team returns to the mainland to host the annual Cal Winter Invitational from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 18-20, in its first home matches of 2013. The Golden Bears welcome No. 42 Saint Mary's, No. 60 Fresno State and Santa Clara for the three-day affair at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Cal is coming off a strong set of performances at the Weinman Foundation Invitational in Hawaii, where the Bears lost just two matches overall. They produced a 25-0 singles record and a 10-2 doubles record in Honolulu.

Sixth-year Cal head coach Amanda Augustus brings four singles players ranked nationally by the ITA to the annual Cal Winter Invitational in seventh-ranked sophomore Zsofi Susanyi, ninth-ranked junior Anett Schutting, 109th-ranked freshman Lynn Chi and 110th-ranked senior Annie Goransson. At the beginning the season, the ITA also rated Cal's Klara Fabikova No. 2 in its list of the top freshmen/newcomers in the nation. In doubles, Schutting and Goransson are ranked No. 32, while junior Alice Duranteau and sophomore Laura Posylkin are ranked No. 59. Goransson and Schutting won the doubles title in the 2012 Cal Winter Invitational.

The singles field this week includes ranked opponents in Santa Clara's No. 26 Katie Le and No. 64 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's. The Gaels and Fresno State joined the Bears at last year's Cal Winter Invitational. Points awarded at each position on the court will determine a singles and a doubles champion at the end of the three-day tourney, which is slated to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Last Time Out: Bears Sweep Singles and Dominate Doubles in Hawaii
Seventh-ranked California completed an almost perfect run in the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Jan. 14, winning all 12 of its matches on the last day of the event at the UH Tennis Complex. After heavy rains delayed the start of the action close to four hours, the Golden Bears won all eight of their singles matches and all four of their doubles matches against a field that included host and No. 54 Hawaii as well as Hawaii Pacific.

Cal dropped just two sets all day on Jan. 14 and was just as dominant in singles as it was on the first two days of the three-day event. In all, the Bears produced a 25-0 singles record and a 10-2 doubles record at the invitational.

Reviewing Last Year's Cal Winter Invitational
Fifth-ranked Cal senior Jana Juricova took home the singles crown while junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting claimed the doubles title at the 2012 Cal Winter Invitational when play concluded on Jan. 15 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Juricova went undefeated in three matches at the top singles court and rounded out her weekend in a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 82-ranked Catherine Isip of Saint Mary's. Down one court, No. 21-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi upended No. 68-ranked Jenny Jullien, 6-4, 6-4, for her ninth straight victory including six against ranked opponents.

In doubles Goransson and Schutting completed their three-match domination of court two on an 8-2 win against Cal Poly's Gabrielle Gatewood and Jennifer Cornea.

Next Time
The Bears host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 27-28, with No. 42 Saint Mary's and No. 60 Fresno State returning to Hellman to join Cal and No. 50 UNLV in the invitational.
