TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 20 Texas Tech topped No. 28 Arizona, 4-3, at Robson Tennis Center on Saturday, marking the Lady Raider's first win over the Wildcats ever.
Arizona had won the previous five meetings heading into Saturday's match. Tech's win also snapped Arizona's 16-match home winning streak.
"I am proud of the way we competed," said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. "However, we must get better at closing out matches. We are very fortunate this one did not get away from us."
After leading 3-0 early, thanks in part to winning the doubles point and picking up quick victories from Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck, Arizona fought back and made it a match with a pair of three set victories.
With two matches still on the court, Elizabeth Ullathorne clinched the win for Texas Tech with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Arizona's Akilah James.
"I am very proud of the guts Liz played with to close out the third set with the match on the line," added Petty.
Texas Tech returns to action on Sunday at 11 a.m., as the Lady Raiders face No. 58 Sacramento State at the Robson Tennis Center.
