EUGENE, Ore.—The University of Oregon men’s tennis team closed out the weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Nevada Wolfpack at home. The Ducks are now 6-0 on the season.
“I thought we came out sluggish in some spots in the doubles, but fortunately we were able to turn it on when we needed to,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “As for the singles, we played real well in some spots, but in others we just didn’t close out when we were up. Fortunately, we had built a big enough lead that it didn’t cost us today. We need to pay attention, close out matches, and not take anything for granted in those situations.”
In singles, Robin Cambier won 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 against Victor Ouvrard in the No. 1 spot, while Jeff Mullen won 6-2, 7-6(5) over Andrew Poustie in the No. 2 spot. Alex Rovello handled Moez Echargui 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot, and Daan Maasland topped Fernando Sunago 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth spot. Daniel Sardu and Lova Randriamampandry both dropped their first matches of the season as Sardu fell 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 to Robert Allan in the fifth spot, and Randriamampandry fell 3-6, 6-2, 4-6.
In doubles play, Oregon’s top duo of Cambier and Mullen defeated Ouvrard and Sunago 8-5, while Sardu and Randriamampandry made a terrific comeback to defeat Echargui and Allan 8-7(5). In the No. 3 spot, Maasland and rovello topped Hinojosa and Poustie 8-2.
“We’re 6-0 and that’s a really good start to the season,” added Schyllander. “We look forward to hosting two very solid teams in Arkansas and New Mexico next weekend, and I definitely think the guys are up for the challenge.”
The Ducks return to action on Friday, Feb. 8th against Arkansas at the UO Student Center at 5 p.m. Next, New Mexico will visit Eugene on Sunday, Feb. 10th.
