ATHENS, Ga. --- The sixth-ranked University of Georgia women’s tennis team travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Bulldogs will face No. 11 Texas in the opening Round of 16.

UP NEXT: Sixth-ranked Georgia travels to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Bulldogs will square off with No. 11 Texas in the opening Round of 16. Georgia is one of 15 teams that qualified for the event by winning an ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament with the 16th team in the elite field being the host Virginia Cavaliers. Along with the Bulldogs, three other SEC teams qualified including No. 9 Alabama, No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 21 Vanderbilt.
HISTORY AT NATIONAL TEAM INDOORS: This year’s appearence marks Georgia’s 23rd in the history of the event. The Bulldogs have won three titles (1994-95, 2002), finished second three times (2001, 2004, 2009) and tied for third eight times (1989-’93, ’98-00). Overall, Georgia sports a 48-19 overall mark at this tournament, the second most wins in tournament history (Stanford - 68)
A LOOK AT TEXAS: Texas is 2-0 in dual matches this season with wins over Wichita State and Utah during ITA Kickoff Weekend. Georgia is 11-3 all-time versus the Longhorns, including a 4-0 win in the Round of 16 during the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Athens. Georgia won the doubles point and then Kowase clinched the match with a third Georgia singles win. Texas’ lone ranked player is No. 79 Noel Scott who is 7-3 in singles this year.
THE ROAD TO CHARLOTTESVILLE: Sixth-ranked Georgia defeated No. 73 Columbia 4-1 and No. 70 Georgia State 7-0 at its own ITA Kickoff Weekend event. It went 1-1 at an ITA Kickoff on the campus of Alabama. They beat No. 24 Tulsa and lost 4-2 to No. 10 Alabama. The Tigers have three players among the top-80 nationally, led by Yana Koroleva (32), Romy Koelzer (69) and Beatrice Gumulya (77).
TOP DOGS: Sophomore Lauren Herring along with juniors Maho Kowase and Kate Fuller anchor the top of the Bulldog lineup. Herring, who earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors in 2012, is ranked eighth nationally with a 23-2 record this year. The 18th-ranked Kowase sports a 21-5 record while the 54th-ranked Fuller is 16-3. Kowase and junior Lilly Kimbell are ranked No. 22 in doubles with a 9-1 record. They have been almost perfect at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, owning a 25-1 career mark including going 22-0 there last season. Georgia has played Fuller and freshman Silvia Garcia at the No. 1 spot through the first three matches, and they are 3-0 with a pair of wins over ranked teams.
LAST WEEK: The Bulldogs traveled to Clemson last weekend and beat the 19th-ranked Tigers 5-2. Georgia took the doubles point with wins by Fuller and Garcia at No. 1 and Herring and King at No 2. In singles, both Fuller and Kowase had come from behind three set wins to propel Georgia to a 5-2 road win. Herring and King both notched singles victories as well.
ON DECK: Georgia will return home to square off with in-state rival Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets, ranked 22nd in the country, sit at 2-2 with a matchup at Clemson on Wednesday.
DID YOU KNOW? Georgia is one of four schools to have both its women’s and men’s tennis programs currently ranked in the top 10. The Georgia men’s team is ranked No. 6. The others are Duke, UCLA and USC.
