WACO, Texas – Baylor’s fifteenth-ranked women’s tennis team will begin play against third-ranked Duke in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Friday at 8 a.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
Baylor (3-1) is unseeded in the tournament, and will face second-seeded Duke (4-0) at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET. The winner of the match will face the winner of seventh-seeded Alabama and No. 14 Northwestern on Saturday.
BU earned its seventh consecutive qualifying berth two weeks ago after defeating both No. 29 Florida State and No. 20 Texas Tech in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
The 16-team national tournament is set to run Friday through Monday, Feb. 8-11, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
“Obviously all the teams that are in a national championship event are all very strong,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “The biggest key for us is that we can’t focus on who we play. We have to go and improve. This event gives us a great opportunity to continue to develop as a team and make positive strides forward.”
BU enters the weekend after a 7-0 loss to No. 1 Florida. Ema Burgic, Megan Horter, and Jordaan Sanford all lost in singles for this first time this season against the Gators. The Lady Bears’ lineup features one ranked singles player, No. 16 Burgic, who has tallied a 3-1 record at the No. 1 singles position. In doubles, BU tandems have notched a 4-5 record.
Duke enters the match with three victories over ranked opponents. The Blue Devils earned their berth into the tournament with wins against No. 75 Wisconsin and No. 63 Wyoming. Duke’s lineup features four singles players ranked in the top 70, including No. 10 Hanna Mar, and two doubles tandems ranked in the top 20.
Baylor is 0-3 all-time against Duke, most recently with a 4-3 loss in 2009.
