BERKELEY - California head coach Amanda Augustus leads her seventh-ranked Golden Bears (3-0) against No. 16 Michigan (3-1) - the team she previously coached - in the opening round of the 26th annual ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship on Friday, Feb. 8, at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET in Charlottesville, Va. Held at the Boar's Head Sports Club, the 16-team tournament features the 15 schools that won ITA Kick-Off Weekend titles in late January plus host Virginia and concludes with the final on Monday, Feb. 11.

Augustus was the head coach at Michigan for one season (2006-07) before returning to Berkeley to coach her alma mater. She was also an assistant coach for the Wolverines in 2005-06.

The winner of the Cal-Michigan match moves on to the second round to face the winner of the first-round clash between fourth-seeded Georgia and Texas, which also begins at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET on Friday. That second-round match begins at 12:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Last year, the Golden Bears reached the semifinal round of the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship (see below). Cal's best result at the ITA indoor tournament came in 2000, when the Bears finished second behind Stanford. The Bears have the sixth-most wins - 30 - at national indoors.

Second-ranked UCLA is the tournament's top seed and the tournament's defending champion.

Scouting the Bears
The Golden Bears won both its matches at the recent ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley to qualify for the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship and produce its 2-0 record. Cal blanked both opponents - topping No. 60 Fresno State, 7-0, on Jan. 27 and beating No. 42 Saint Mary's, 7-0, on Jan. 28 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Cal head coach Amanda Augustus - now in her sixth year as head coach of her alma mater - brings a talented lineup to Charlottesville that includes two singles players ranked in the top 10 of the ITA poll in sophomore/seventh-ranked Zsofi Susanyi and junior/No. 9 Anett Schutting as well as freshman/No. 109 Lynn Chi and senior/No. 110 Annie Goransson. Cal also boasts a pair of nationally ranked doubles teams in 32nd-ranked Schutting/Goransson and 59th-ranked junior Alice Duranteau and sophomore Laura Posylkin.

Scouting the Wolverines
In its most recent competition, Michigan lost to No. 8 North Carolina, 5-2, on Feb. 3 in Chapel Hill, N.C., to run its record to 3-1. In three home matches, the Wolverines beat No. 67 Brown, 7-0, on Jan. 26, defeated No. 30 South Carolina, 4-0, on Jan. 27 and topped No. 25 Tennessee, 4-3.

Michigan boasts a pair of nationally ranked singles players in No. 61 Ronit Yurovsky and No. 94 Amy Zhu. In doubles, the pair of Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas is ranked No. 21.

Ronni Bernstein - who followed Amanda Augustus as Michigan's head coach - is in her sixth year.

Last Year at ITA Indoors
At the 2012 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship, seventh-ranked Cal beat No. 11 Miami, 4-0, in the first round and No. 6 Georgia, 4-0, in the second round, before falling to top-seeded and third-ranked Duke, 4-1, on Feb. 12, 2012, in the semifinals. It was the third time in four years that the Golden Bears had advanced as far as the semifinal round in the annual indoor tournament.

Cal earned one point on the day, with a singles victory at court two from 21st-ranked Zsofi Susanyi. The Cal freshman defeated No. 38-ranked Hanna Mar, 6-2, 6-1.

Last Time
With a trip to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship on the line, seventh-ranked California did what it normally does - dominate the opposition - to earn its berth the upcoming tournament in Charlottesville, Va. The Golden Bears (2-0) swept No. 42 Saint Mary's, 7-0, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship on Jan. 28 at the Hellman Tennis Complex to clinch their berth.

Cal did not lose a set to the Gaels (1-1) and lost just one set over the two-day ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Hellman. One day earlier, the Bears shut out No. 60 Fresno State, 7-0, to earn its spot in the Jan. 28 final.
