LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 6 USC women's tennis team got back to business on its home courts today with a dominant 7-0 win over San Diego State. A smooth doubles run set up the Trojans for great success in singles. USC rang up lopsided decisions down the line, with wins coming fast and furious. Gabriella DeSimone stood out in the flurry of victories by coming through with the clinching win from court three, and USC was in the books with its eighth win of the year. USC is now 8-1 overall with today's victory over the Aztecs.
On court three, USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Giuliana Olmos teamed up with precision to silence their Aztec opponents with an 8-0 sweep that set the tone for the match. The Trojans' top guns Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria brought it home as the cleanup crew on court one with an 8-2 finish that wrapped up the doubles point for the Trojan cause suspending play on court two where Danielle Lao and Valeria Pulido were up 7-3 on their opponents.
In singles play, no Trojan dropped more than three games in a single set as USC kept the foot on the gas through to the winning sweep. Ranked No. 1 in the nation in both singles and doubles, sophomore Sabrina Santamaria kept her hot hand by drilling out a 6-2, 6-0 win over Julia Wais on court one. Her fellow top-ranked doubles partner, Kaitlyn Christian, came through next with a near-perfect 6-0, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 spot over Kristin Buth. That made it 3-0 Trojans, prompting a flurry of USC wins in a clamor for the clincher. #60 sophomore Gabriella DeSimone would come through next, making it a win at 4-0 with her 6-0, 6-2 victory over SDSU's Lauren Antonana Iriarte on court three. Ellie Yates and #81 Giuliana Olmos would come next with a one-two punch on courts six and four, respectively, with takedowns that made it a 6-0 USC advantage. That left USC's #3 senior Danielle Lao plugging away on court two against Aztec Alicia Aguilar. Lao would put an end to the day with her 6-1, 6-3 victory, and that capped the 7-0 win for the Women of Troy.
No. 6 USC now turns to a trip to Berkeley for a clash with No. 7 California on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 12 p.m.
