Glendale, AZ—Brigham Young University Hawaii tennis coach Dave Porter picked up his 1,200 win as coach today as the Seasider women’s tennis team defeated Cal State-LA 9-0 and UC San Diego 7-0 to improve to 7-0 for the season. The wins give Porter 594 wins as coach of the women’s team and 606 as men’s coach for the milestone of 1,200 career wins.
Coach
Porter’s latest achievement makes him only the second coach to reach the 1,200 win plateau in college tennis. He trails only former University of Hawaii legend Jim Schwitters, who amassed 1,326 wins coaching both the men’s and women’s teams.
Coach Porter said he is “grateful to have been allowed to coach so long at such a great school as BYU-Hawaii.” As always, however, Porter was quick to defer credit to his players. “I’m just glad my team was able to pick up a pair of wins today despite some injuries and the fact that it was the last day of a grueling road trip,” he said.
The
Seasiders swept 15th-ranked Cal State-LA without dropping a set but lost a singles match on a super-tiebreaker and another due to retiring due to injury in the match against 32nd-ranked UC San Diego. BYU-Hawaii will play UH-Hilo on Friday in Hilo, Hawaii at 1:00 pm HST.
