Purdue Hits the Road for a Pair of Ranked Matches

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 20 Purdue women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend to take on No. 45 Kansas State on Sunday and No. 65 Wichita State on Monday in Wichita, Kan. The first serve between the Boilermakers and Wildcats is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. Purdue will then square off with Wichita State on Monday at 10 a.m.
 
Purdue (3-1) has wins over No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 35 Washington State and Marshall this season. The lone loss on the season was 4-3 at No. 10 Northwestern in a non-conference matchup during ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Boilermakers currently have the highest ranking in program history. Sophomore Lynda Xepoleas is still in the rankings and is the No. 105 in the country. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native has played all four dual matches at No. 1 this season.
 
Mara Schmidt has been strong at No. 2 for Purdue. The junior is 5-2 in singles on the season with four of her wins coming at No. 2. Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum is coming off Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors and a strong performance for Purdue. Bernard-Feigenbaum clinched the win for the Boilermakers over Notre Dame with a three-set win where she trailed 3-0 in the final set. The freshman had a stellar fall season, going 10-1 in singles. She is now 2-0 in spring singles action.
 
Kansas State (3-2) is coming off a pair of ranked losses last weekend as the Wildcats fell to No. 51 Memphis and No. 70 Columbia. Both matches were decided by a 4-2 score. Kansas State is led by Petra Niedermayerova who has the No. 1 singles spot locked up. The Wildcat has won all five singles matches this season and is ranked 17th in the country. Senior Karla Bonacic also plays an important role in Kansas State’s lineup. The senior has won five of her last six singles matches. The Wildcats also have a couple ranked doubles teams, though both include Niedermayerova. She and Bonacic are ranked No. 26 in the country while she is ranked 28th with Ivana Kubickova.
 
Purdue and Kansas State are tied in the all-time series at two wins apiece. The Boilermakers got the best of the Wildcats last season in the ITA Kick Off Weekend match in Clemson, S.C., by winning, 4-1.
 
Wichita State (3-5) is coming off a 6-1 win against UMKC last weekend. Rebecca Pedrazzi holds down the No. 1 singles spot for the Shockers. Wichita State will host Kansas State before taking on the Boilermakers.
