DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Monica Turewicz won her 22nd consecutive singles match to lead the third-ranked Duke women's tennis over No. 70 Princeton, 7-0, Saturday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils now own an 8-1 record on the season, the 11th time a season has started with an 8-1 mark or better under the tutelage of head coach Jamie Ashworth, including five consecutive seasons.

"Princeton competed really well, and I thought especially at the beginning of doubles, we were knocked on our heels a little bit," Ashworth said. "We have to do a better job of playing with a target on our back as opposed to the last couple of matches where we haven't played like we are protecting something. Today, especially how we started, we played like we were protecting ourselves. For us to be really good, we want teams like Princeton to play really well against us. We don't want them to come in and roll over and it's just getting use to that."

In doubles action, the seventh-ranked duo of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfeld found themselves down 2-3 to Princeton's Joan Cannon and Katie Goepel on court one, but broke serve to regain momentum, and eventually downed Cannon and Goepel, 8-5. In the third position, sophomore Annie Mulholland and junior Marianne Jodoin dropped the first five games to Amanda Muliawan and Katherine Flanigan, and despite a brief comeback, the Duke duo was unable to slow the Tigers and dropped the match, 8-5.

The Blue Devils clinched the doubles point for the eighth time this season, but it came down to the final match on court two between the Blue Devil tandem of Hanna Mar and Monica Turewicz and Princeton's Lindsay Graff and Monica Chow. After trading games early, Mar and Turewicz broke serve to go up 7-5 with the opportunity for Mar to serve for the match. Mar was unable to hold serve, but the Duke duo was able to respond, breaking Graff in deuce number eight to win the match, 8-6, and clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, No. 64 Clayton took just over an hour to dispatch of Chow, 6-0, 6-3, in the fourth position, giving Duke an early 2-0 lead against the Tigers. On court three, Turewicz dismantled Flanigan, 6-2, 6-2, to win her 22nd consecutive singles match, after claiming 15 straight singles wins to conclude her freshman campaign.

On court six, Mulholland jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set against Hahn, and continued her solid play to cruise to a 6-4, 6-1 victory to clinch the match for Duke. In the fifth position, Jodoin fell behind Goepel, 4-5, in the first set, but rallied to level the match at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Goepel opened up a 6-4 lead, but Jodoin responded, winning four consecutive points to claim the set, 7-6 (8-6). Jodoin continued her solid play in the second set, topping Goepel, 6-1.

In the second position, No. 14 Mar edged No. 85 Muliawan, 6-2, 6-4, while Goldfeld, ranked No. 45 in the most recent ITA poll, topped Graff, 7-5, 7-6(7-1) , on court one.

Duke is slated to begin a four-match road trip as it travels to face two top-25 squads next weekend. The Blue Devils are set to travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to play No. 12 Michigan Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m., before heading to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 22 Notre Dame Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m.
