BERKELEY - Ninth-ranked California swept the visiting Sacramento State Hornets, 7-0, in a nonconference match on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears improved their record to 5-3, while the Hornets fell to 1-6.
The competition included the return of senior Annie Goransson, the Cal senior who had missed some action due to a minor injury. Goransson and fellow senior Tayler Davis beat Olivia Boija and Saskia Angerer, 8-1, on court three in the first completed match of the day.
"It was really, really fun to play," Goransson said. "I was so happy to be out on the court. I had so much energy. I've been wanting to play for so long. Being with my teammates again on the court was an amazing feeling."
Cal clinched the doubles point on court two when the duo of freshman Klara Fabikova and junior Kelly Chui topped the Sacramento State pair of Katharina Knoebl and Jennifer Nguyen, 8-3. On court one, the 30th-ranked team of junior Anett Schutting and freshman Lynn Chi completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 triumph over Rebecca Delgado and Sophie Lohscheidt.
"We had two new doubles combinations on courts two and three, and I was impressed with how they meshed and got after it," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Tayler and Annie have played together before somewhat. I was just so excited to get Annie back on the court. That was really great to see. I always coach them that good doubles players can play with anybody."
In singles, Chi - ranked 49th nationally - made quick work of Lohscheidt on court two, beating the Hornet junior, 6-0, 6-0, and then Schutting - ranked eighth in singles - knocked off Delgado, 6-1, 6-3, on court one to give Cal a 3-0 lead. Fabikova soon clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2, triumph over Knoebl on court three that made the team score 4-0.
Cal then completed the rest of the singles matches in quick succession, and in order, as Davis beat Nguyen, 6-3, 6-0, on court four, Chui bested Boija, 6-2, 6-3, on court five and junior Alice Duranteau defeated Angerer, 6-1, 6-2, on court six to make the final score 7-0.
"Sac State usually plays better in singles than they do in doubles," Augustus added. "They fought, but I think we really took control. It could be real easy in a match like that to let your focus wander, but I think the girls did a good job. I was just happy to see everyone close out their matches."
Cal heads to the peninsula on Saturday, March 2, to battle No. 26 Stanford in the Big Slam at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
