LA JOLLA, Calif. - Finn Tearney and Francis Alcantara of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team won the consolation draw of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship today at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The duo won six in a row over the last three days to take home the title.
Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) and Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) won three in a row yesterday, including a straight-set win over a top seed, to punch their ticket to this morning’s semifinals.
Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) also had a successful run in the consolation bracket yesterday, matching Tearney and Alcantara with three-consecutive victories.
The two Wave duos met in today’s semifinals. Tearney and Alcantara, who play in the No. 1 spot in the lineup for Pepperdine, defeated the Waves’ No. 3 squad 6-2, 7-6 (6).
In the finals Tearney and Alcantara made short work of Furman’s Joel Cook and Andrew Mellow, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
This was Tearney and Alcantara’s first tournament victory in as many attempts.

The Waves resume dual action this Wednesday, March 6 when they welcome Michigan to the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. match. The week continues with a road contest at defending NCAA Champion USC on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m.
