SPOKANE, Wash. – Zachery Lyons (Sr., Vancouver, Wash.) and Lukas Kleinman (Soph., Vancouver, Wash.) provided Linfield’s only point in a 8-1 Northwest Conference loss to Whitworth Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.

Lyons and Kleinman prevailed 8-5 over the Pirate tandem of Blake Miller and Chris Engelmann in the second flight. Whitworth countered with doubles victories in the top and bottom pairings. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham paired for an 8-4 result over Linfield’s Mica Roos and Joel Trousdale (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) at No. 1. John Talbot and Troy Patterson downed the Wildcats Ben Brewer (Soph., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Tim Hawkins (Fr., Boise, Idaho) 8-2 at No. 3.

Whitworth scored decisions in each of the six singles flights. Williams won a thrilling third-set tiebreaker over Lyons 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 in the closest battle of the day. Brigham rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Roos at No. 2, while Engelmann defeated Joel Trousdale (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3.

In other flights, Miller edged Hawkins 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4, Talbot pushed past Alex Mangan (Fr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Matt Goebel set down Kleinman 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.

The Pirates improved to 4-2 in the NWC, 4-7 overall. Linfield remained winless for the season, falling to 0-7.

NEXT: Linfield returns to McMinnville for its next two matches. Friday, the Wildcats welcome the Puget Sound Loggers to the Linfield Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. match. Then Saturday, the ‘Cats oppose a resurgent George Fox team at 1 o’clock.
