College Tennis News - Florida State Rolls To A 6-1 Victory Over USF

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 44 Florida State men's tennis team (11-3) rolled away today with a 6-1 win over No. 75 USF (4-5) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. After winning all three doubles matches, the Seminoles went on to win five of the singles matches for the win on the cold Sunday afternoon.

"I was really pleased with the effort today," said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. "I thought it was a hard day to play 100% with the cold and wind. We were a little bit beat-up today, we were a little tired and injured. The guys that were a little injured came through. I thought the key to the match was Jordan (Kelly-Houston) and Anderson (Reed) who were down breaks in their first sets and they both came back to win those sets and ran off with the rest of the match."

The Seminoles ran away quickly in doubles play to take an early lead. After losing their past two matches, seniors Anderson Reed and Jordan Kelly-Houston bounced back with an 8-2 win on court two over Guillermo De Vilchez and Ravi Patel. Senior Andres Bucaro and sophomore Benjamin Lock won their second ranked match in a row by a score of 8-3 over Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz and Oliver Pramming on court one. On court three, junior Blake Davis and sophomore Dominic Cotrone defeated Frederico Sabogal and Everth Dzib on court three 8-5.

The Seminoles started a little slow but bounced back to win five first sets in singles play. Freshman Michael Rinaldi came off the courts first with a 6-2, 6-0 win on court six over Dzib. Kelly-Houston made the match 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win against De Vilchez on court three.

"I fought through a couple breaks of serve in both sets to come up with the win," said Kelly-Houston. "The team had a really solid weekend and we will work hard this week to come out with a win in Oklahoma."

Reed clinched the match against Patel on court five with a 6-4, 6-3 win. No. 89 Cotrone won his 12th match of the season 6-4, 7-6 (2) against Pramming on court one. Davis won his first set and fell to 1-5 in the second set. He won five straight games and won a tiebreaker for a 7-5, 7-6 (8) win on court four to Juan Carlos Acuna.

"I was down early in the match and really started playing longer, smarter points," said Reed. "I was able to turn the match late in the second and run away with it. I'm glad I could pull it out for the team today. My teammates gave me confidence to do so with them having won so many first sets. I'm proud of the team as a whole on the weekend and we look forward to a week of training before we head to Oklahoma for a top five contest."
