LAS VEGAS – The No.22-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team defeated UNLV on Wednesday 6-1. With the victory the Seminoles move to 9-4 (1-2 ACC) on the season. 

“I am so proud of the girls and how they responded today,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It shows a lot about them to bounce back so strongly after a tough loss on Sunday. We got better today and got back to our winning ways, and now these next few days off will be that much more enjoyable, and well earned.”

The Seminoles snatched the doubles point after senior Francesca Segarelli and Kristina Schleich defeated Luca Batta and Nives Pavlovic, 8-3 on court one.

UNLV had the edge in doubles after Kerrie Carwright and Daneika Borthwick fell to Aleksandra Josifoska and Janine Eramus, 8-5, however Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens continued their court three dominance with win. Vriens and Sargeant defeated Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Iren Kostseva, 8-4.

Sargeant got back on the winning track with a convincing, 6-0, 6-0 win on court four to move to 20-5 on the year in singles.

With the Seminoles up 2-0, Schleich controlled her match defeating Kosteva 6-0,6-4 on court six.

Cartwright delivered the clinching, 4-0 blow with a victory on court five against Erasmus. Cartwright picked up her seventh win on the spring, 6-3, 6-4.

After the match was decided, Vriens retired her match to No. 103 Batta on court two making the score 4-1.

Borthwick and Segarelli were left on courts one and three respectively.  Both Borthwick and Segarelli fell in their first sets before storming back to take the second, forcing a decisive third.

Segarelli fell in a first set tiebreak before controlling the second 6-2 against Pavlovic. With the match already in the bag, Segarelli and Pavlovic played a third set tiebreak points, resulting with the Seminole dominating, 10-3. Segarelli won with a final score of 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).

On court one, Borthwick (No. 50) faced another ranked foe in Josifoska (No. 24). Borthwick dropped her first set before coming back to take the second, 6-3.  In her tiebreaker, Borthwick outlasted Josifoska for her seventh win over a ranked opponent this year. Borthwick won, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).

“It felt great to come back and win the third set after a tough loss against Georgia Tech,” Borthwick said. “I just tried to stay in the match when I was down and take my chances when I needed to. I was happy that it paid off today.”
