College Tennis News - Anteaters Win Big over No. 38 LBSU

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's tennis had been rolling of late with six wins in a row, but the big test came on Saturday as rival and conference favorite Long Beach State entered Anteater Tennis Stadium. UCI (9-3, 3-0) would break through busting the 3-3 tie with a come-from-behind, three-set victory thanks to Kristina Smith.

The 125th-ranked Smith dropped the opening set against Klaudia Malenovska, 4-6, but would come roaring back with a 6-4 of herself in set two before breaking away with a 6-1 third set win to clinch it.

The Anteaters got to that point after coming out of the gates hot with a sweep of doubles. Smith and the other half of her 49th-ranked doubles pair, Franziska Goettsching, scored the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 1. Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer continued their dominance with an 8-1 win at No. 3.

Singles would run through with sweep besides Smith at No. 1. Once again, the freshmen rolled with sweeps at Nos. 4 and 6 to provide the necessary points.

UCI now seizes control of the Big West with a 3-0 mark, and will now continue its month-long home stretch. Next up for the Anteaters is SMU, Sunday, March 10th at 11:00 a.m. in the third of nine straight at home.
