COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Boise State sophomore Garrett Patton was named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for competition from March 13-18, the conference announced Wednesday. It is the first-career weekly honor for Patton and the third time this season a Bronco has been recognized.
Patton, a Boise, Idaho native, went a combined 4-0 over the weekend, helping the No. 46 Broncos defeat three ranked teams and win the Blue-Gray Classic, held March 15-17, in Montgomery, Ala.
Playing at No. 2 doubles, Patton and Scott Sears defeated Nebraska's Dusty Boyer and Bradford Zitsch, 8-3, to clinch the doubles point as the Broncos turned back the No. 38 Cornhuskers, 4-0. Against No. 22 Notre Dame, Patton won his No. 6 singles match over Ryan Bandy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, as the Broncos clipped the Fighting Irish, 4-3. In the championship match against No. 47 Texas Tech, Patton and Sears defeated Jeff Bryan and Felipe Soares, 9-7. In singles play, Patton topped Hugo Dojas in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, as the Broncos defeated the Red Raiders, 4-3.
Patton and Sears are now 12-3 on the season. Boise State went from being unranked to No. 46 in the latest ITA Rankings. Twelve of Boise State's first 16 matches have been against top-70 opponents.
