College Tennis News - Devin McCarthy Earns First-Career Big Ten Athlete of the Week Honor

COLUMBUS, Ohio- Devin McCarthy, a senior on the fifth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team, was named Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The honor is the first for McCarthy, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio.

On the season, McCarthy is 12-2 overall and has won six consecutive matches, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Albert Wagner of Louisville at the No. 2 position Tuesday evening in the Varsity Tennis Center. McCarthy also won his 14th doubles match vs. the Cardinals. Playing on court No. 2 with Ille Van Engelen, the Buckeye tandem beat Albert Wagner and Van Damrongsri, 8-3. The Buckeyes went on to win the match, 6-1, their sixth-consecutive victory since dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 1 Virginia Feb. 17.

During spring break, Ohio State traveled to Malibu, Calif., where it faced then-No.1 2 Pepperdine. McCarthy helped lead the Scarlet and Gray to a 4-1 victory after defeating No. 53 Francis Alcantara, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. With the doubles point coming down to the No. 3 position, McCarthy and Hunter Callahan played Mousheg Hovhannisyan and David Sofaer in a tight match that reached a 7-7 tie until the Buckeye duo broke Hovhannisyan and Sofaer's serve to take an 8-7 lead and serve for the match. McCarthy and Callahan took advantage of the opportunity and won the match, 9-7, to lift the Scarlet and Gray to their 16th doubles win of the season.

Ohio State returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday when it plays Purdue at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will remain in Columbus for a noon match vs. Indiana Sunday. Matches are scheduled to be played at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Olentangy River Road. However, with the cool temperatures, matches will be played at the Varsity Tennis Center.
