BOISE, Idaho - Boise State’s 46th-ranked men’s tennis team opened their Boise State SpringHill Suites Invitational Saturday morning with an impressive 6-1 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles in the Boas Indoor Tennis Center at Boise. Fresh off its Blue Gray National Tennis Invitational championship last weekend, Boise State wasted little time in taking control against Marquette sweeping all three doubles matches then followed with wins in five of the six singles matches, four in straight sets. The victory improved the Broncos to 10-8 overall on the year. They have now won four consecutive matches and seven of their last eight, as well as extended their home win streak to 23.

Garrett Patton and Scott Sears got the Broncos rolling when they won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3 over Marquette’s Logon Collins and Cameron Tehrani. They were followed by 8-4 wins on courts one and three to claim the doubles team point. Toby Mitchell and Filipp Pogostkin clinched the point with their win on court three over Gleb Sklyr and James Stark, while Andrew Bettles and Nathan Sereke downed the Eagles’ Dan Mamalat and Vukasin Teofanovic on court one to complete the sweep.

The singles started well for the blue and orange as they claimed a 3-0 team score lead with wins by Sereke on court two over Teofanovic by a 6-2, 6-0 score, followed shortly afterwards by Thomas Tenreiro defeating Marquette’s David Packowitz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within two points in the team score when Sklyr handed the Broncos’ Brian Foley a 6-2, 6-2 loss, making the team score 3-1.

Up two, Boise State’s match winner came on court four where Pogostkin won in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 over Tehrani putting the Broncos up 4-1.

With the match already decided the Broncos closed out the competition with wins on court three where Sears defeated the Eagles’ Collins 6-4, 6-2, followed by 25th-ranked Andy Settles three-set victory over Marquette’s Mamalat 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 on court one.

This was the fist of two matches Saturday for the Broncos in the Boise State SpringHills Suites Invitational at Boise. Boise State will take on No. 62 University of Idaho (17-1) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday tentatively scheduled for the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center, weather permitting, otherwise it will be played at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center at 1507 South Oakland Avenue in Boise.
