BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men’s tennis team completed the sweep on Saturday winning its second of two matches on the day with a big 4-2 victory over rival Idaho to wrap-up the Boise State SpringHill Suites Invitational at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The 46th-ranked Broncos came out slow dropping the doubles point to the 62nd-ranked Vandals before rallying to win four of the five singles matches completed, the team game-winner came from Scott Sears on court three. The win improved Boise State to 11-8 overall, while Idaho goes to 17-2 on the year.

“This is like the Discovery channel, we’re still trying to discover who we are,” said head coach Greg Patton. “I was disappointed that we came out flat and lost the doubles point, but we battled back for the win. They guys pulled together and fought back against a very strong team. This was a historic win for our program against a really good Idaho team that has a great chance of making it into the NCAA Tournament this May. They will challenge for the WAC title this spring, this was a really big win for us.”

The win was the eight in the last nine matches for Boise State extending the Bronco’s win streak to five overall and its home streak to 24. This match was the Broncos 13th against a nationally ranked opponent this spring as they improved to 5-8 in those contests.

Boise State came out slow to open the doubles competition as the Broncos found themselves in a hole heading into singles. The Vandals surprised the blue and orange by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the team point.

Down one heading into the singles portion of the competition Boise State had its work cut out for it. It started off with the Broncos Thomas Tenreiro defeating Idaho’s Caser Torres on court five in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to tie the team score at one each.

That win was followed by Idaho’s Jose Bendeck giving the Vandals their last lead of the night with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Boise State’s Filipp Pogostkin at No. 4 singles.

Boise State began its final rally moments later when No. 25 ranked Andy Bettles defeated Idaho’s No. 122-ranked Dmitry Perevoshchikov on court one 7-5, 6-4 to tie the contest at two points per team.

The momentum carried over to court two where the Broncos’ Nathan Sereke downed Abid Akbar in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to give Boise State the team lead for good up 3-2. The match clincher came on court three where Scott Sears won a hard fought battle against the Vandals’ Marius Cirstea in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The number six singles match was not completed once the team victory was decided, but the Broncos’ Garrett Patton had a one set (6-3) lead over Idaho’s Cristobal Ramos when the contest was stopped.
